Terence David John Pratchett (28 April 1948 — 12 March 2015) was a British Fantasy author and Archmage of Tropeomancy. 1 A Knight Bachelor (i.e. Sir Terry Pratchett OBE), he was described as the most shoplifted author in Britain (belying an American critic who once claimed that he hadn't found his audience).. Most famous for the Discworld series, but this was not his only work.
Very early effort by Pratchett, as I understand it. "Strata" is a straight-forward science fiction novel, somewhat akin to Larry Niven's "Ringworld" series. For that reason, fans of Pratchett's "Discworld" books may not entirely enjoy "Strata". But if you like straight SF by authors such as Niven, Brin, or Clarke, you will probably enjoy "Strata".

Discovering two of her employees have placed a fossilized plesiosaur in the wrong stratum, not to mention the fact it is holding a placard which reads, 'End Nuclear Testing Now', doesn't dismay the woman who Strata could be said to be a precursor to the Discworld novels, as it also features a flat Earth similar to the Discworld. The plot and characters however are modelled on and parody the novel Ringworld by Larry Niven.

Terry Pratchett's Strata, is an early work, that stands on its own as a nice piece of science fiction. The characters are interesting and the plot line is clever. For me, the ending wasn't as crisp as you'd find in his more recent works, but the journey is worth the effort.
